Murdoch University Library Three Year Plan 2010 - 2012

Introduction

Murdoch University Library is a dynamic and forward-looking Library supporting the learning, teaching and research endeavours of the University. The Library works collaboratively with partners across the University, the State, across Australia, and internationally to ensure the best possible services and resources are developed and available to the Murdoch University community. Two particular areas of focus for the Library are providing an equivalent library experience and service to transnational and external students, and branding and promoting Library services throughout the University community.

Development of Library collections and services are guided by the University's values of:

  • Equity and Social Justice
  • Sustainability
  • Global Responsibility
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship

in addition to values identified by the Library of:

  • Relevance
  • Flexibility
  • Efficiency

This 3-year plan outlines the strategic directions which the Library will take in four key areas:

  1. Collections and Resources
  2. People
  3. Research
  4. Learning

1. Collections and Resources

Since the establishment of Murdoch University, a rich collection of resources has been developed by the Library. Over the next three years, the Library will continue to focus on developing collections of relevance to the University's teaching and research interests by:

  1. Ensuring an appropriate mixture of both physical and electronic resources and that appropriate access for off campus and transnational staff and students is negotiated with appropriate vendors
  2. Developing collections in coordination with all stakeholders including: academic and research staff, students, and stakeholders associated with the Rockingham Regional Community Library including the Challenger Institute of Technology and the City of Rockingham
  3. Ensuring that collections and resources are developed in keeping with the evolving nature of courses offered by Murdoch University as outlined by the Murdoch University Academic Profile
  4. Seeking opportunities to enhance the range of material available to the Murdoch University community through innovative practices and participation in consortial and cooperative arrangements both nationally and internationally
  5. Ensuring that physical space and facilities are continually reviewed and developed to ensure appropriate space utilisation and facilities to support and enhance the learning environment

2. People

People are our most valuable resource and Library staff are respected throughout the University for their professionalism and the quality of their service. Over the next three years the Library will continue to focus on developing and supporting staff to deliver a dynamic and modern academic library service by:

  1. Ensuring that staff are selected, developed and trained in appropriate skills and capabilities
  2. Fostering leadership potential and implementing succession planning strategies
  3. Ensuring a flexible and innovative approach to client service and service delivery with a particular view to the needs of transnational students

3. Research

Research and research training have long been a factor of Murdoch University's strength and the development of the seven research institutes focuses strategic research directions and outcomes. While researchers may rarely visit the Library's physical space, they rely heavily on the electronic resources provided by the Library. Over the coming three years, the Library will:

  1. Investigate ways to improve collaboration with Murdoch University researchers
  2. Continue to develop and promote the University Institutional Research Repository as a showcase for the University's research outputs and activities
  3. Identify areas of relevant research into library services and resources, especially in collaboration with IRU partner libraries

4. Learning

The Library plays an integral role in providing environments that facilitate learning and the resources and services to enhance learning. Librarians work collaboratively with academic colleagues to provide a range of services for those who wish to incorporate Library resources, services and teaching materials into their own teaching and learning spaces as well as working cooperatively with colleagues to ensure transnational students can access appropriate resources and services. Over the coming three years the Library will:

  1. Ensure the Library's information literacy program is sustainable and supports the University's Learning & Teaching Plan in focus and delivery mechanisms
  2. Ensure the availability of information literacy training to all Murdoch University students, irrespective of their discipline, their location or their mode of study with a particular view to the needs to transnational students
  3. Continue to build partnerships with colleagues at the Dubai and Singapore campuses
  4. Ensure the Library’s information literacy involvement is sustainable
  5. Address the skills and capabilities of Library staff in the design, delivery and evaluation of information literacy, adhering to identified and international best practise
