Linking to an article in a database
In most cases you are not permitted to make copies of journal articles to post on a web site, but you can make a link to an article in a database that the Library subscribes to. You don’t need to ask for permission and you don’t need to worry about copyright.
Creating links to articles using the Citation Linker
- Go to the Citation Linker
- Enter the details of your article as shown below and click on 'Go'
Note: The Citation Linker works best if you enter the complete details of your article. As a minimum, make sure you enter the name of the journal or the ISSN, the volume, issue, page, and the date.
- If full text is available online you will go to a screen with links to full text
- Click on the 'Save Full Text Link' icon
- Copy the URL on the pop up screen and use it to link to the article in your LMS unit or webpage
Note: if the URL has only one forward slash after http: then add a second one to give http:// - Contact your Subject Librarian if you do not get an article link.
Creating links to articles in specific databases
Some databases don’t work with Citation Linker, but you may still be able to create links to articles using the instructions below.
LexisNexisAU
Use the Intranet Tools for LexisNexis AU to set up permanent links through the Murdoch proxy server.
Westlaw
- Start with the base URL - http://0-www.westlaw.com.prospero.murdoch.edu.au/find/default.wl?ForceTo=au.westlaw.com&SP=MurdochUni-03&FindType=F&ForceAction=Y&SV=Full&RS=ITK3.0&VR=1.0&cite=
- Copy the citation for the case or article you want to link to
- Remove all brackets and spaces from the citation. For example:
- o 207 CLR 278 becomes 207CLR278,
- o 600 ANAMAPSS 157 becomes 600ANAMAPSS157
- o [1999] NSWCA 323 becomes 1999NSWCA323
- Add the citation information to the end of the base URL
A complete link to an article in Westlaw should look like this:
http://0-www.westlaw.com.prospero.murdoch.edu.au/find/default.wl?ForceTo=au.westlaw.com&SP=MurdochUni-03&FindType=F&ForceAction=Y&SV=Full&RS=ITK3.0&VR=1.0&cite=207CLR278
A few variations
- A jurisdictional identifier may be necessary as for the following UK case
http://0-www.westlaw.com.prospero.murdoch.edu.au/find/default.wl?ForceTo=au.westlaw.com&SP=MurdochUni-03&FindType=F&ForceAction=Y&SV=Full&RS=ITK3.0&VR=1.0&cite=1976ch55(UK)
- When the date is in square brackets do not use volume numbers. The following is a link for [1980] 1 All ER 213:
http://0-www.westlaw.com.prospero.murdoch.edu.au/find/default.wl?ForceTo=au.westlaw.com&SP=MurdochUni-03&FindType=F&ForceAction=Y&SV=Full&RS=ITK3.0&VR=1.0&cite=1980AllER213
- Links to newspapers should look like this:
http://0-www.westlaw.com.prospero.murdoch.edu.au/find/default.wl?ForceTo=au.westlaw.com&SP=MurdochUni-03&FindType=F&ForceAction=Y&SV=Full&RS=ITK3.0&VR=1.0&cite=2005WLNR20466248
The 2005WLNR20466248 is the unique identifier for the article.
